  3. More Tea Myths

MYTH #1: White sugar and lemon are thought to affect the antioxidants in tea, but not milk. It appears protein in milk could potentially bind two antioxidants and render them unavailable to the body. Tea must be steeped for three minutes for all of the antioxidants to take effect.

MYTH#2: Tea drinking does not strengthen bones. Just one week after researchers reported that heavy tea drinking could reduce the risk of dying after a heart attack, another study has found that long time tea drinking may actually strengthen bones!

MYTH #3: You can heat tea water in the microwave. Those who do will notice the water re-boiling (because it’s superheated) when they add the tea bag. It’s guaranteed to make a dull cup. Therefore, it is best to boil water in a kettle.

4. Blue Mountain Tea

'The Blue Mountains' are situated in Southern India. A picturesque range of undulating hilly landscapes where tea is grown at elevations ranging from 1000 meters to above 2500 meters. Rainfall varies from 100 to 600 centimetres. These conditions favour the fine flavours and brisk liquor of Nilgiri teas. The combination of fragrance and briskness makes Nilgiri a truly unique tea found nowhere else in the world.
Nilgiri Region
Fine flavored teas are produced in the Nilgiris. Flavour is derived from the high elevation and prevails throughout the year in the varying degrees. They are the blender's dream, for while other high-grown teas have flavour, Nilgiri teas give the liquor body and strength as well. It is versatile and welcoming, and robust and smooth. It can be enjoyed anytime of the day, black, with or without milk and sugar.
To ensure that you get "Pure Nilgiri Teas", the Tea Board has created a logo for each of the types of teas, which can be used on a packet only when it contains 100% Darjeeling, Assam, or Nilgiri Teas. So the next time you buy a packet of Tea with the Nilgiri logo, rest assured that the packet contains 100% Nilgiri tea.
All Nilgiri Teas offered by Tea Connexions carry the Nilgiri Logo. The most popular Nilgiri tea we carry include Nilgiri Premium. It is cultivated high in the blue mountains of southern India; Nilgiri Premium fulfills its promise of mild aroma, smooth taste and deep golden colour. This whole leaf tea is delightful with or without milk. A higher quality Nilgiri High Elevation tea is also available in our gift sets: Three Regions Wood Tea Boxes and Rosewood Jewel Tea Case.

  6. Tea and Beauty

Tea - just saying the name of the world's most popular beverage is naturally relaxing and refreshing. A cup of tea can be healing and calming - a simple moment of tranquility in a busy day. This unassuming brew has become one of the hottest key ingredients in natural cosmetics today.

Tea is a strong antioxidant, rich in vitamins C and E. Japanese research shows it to be a powerful enemy of the hated "free radicals," which cause our bodies to age. Tea has a variety of beauty benefits and can be used all over your body to cleanse the skin, soothe sunburn, highlight the hair, relax your muscles, and calm puffy eyes.

Terrific Beauty Tea Tips

Here are a few easy ways to use tea to look and feel your best:
• Reduce under-eye puffiness by placing two cool tea bags over each eye and relaxing for 10 to 15 minutes.
• Soothe an insect bite or cut by placing a green tea bag over the affected area. The tea will reduce itching and swelling.
• For bad sunburn, try a tea bath. Hang four or five oolong, jasmine, or green tea bags under your bath spout as you fill your tub. Soak in the fragrant, warm water.
• To keep your feet smelling their best, try a foot soak in natural tea. Soaking in black tea will help reduce foot odor because tea is naturally astringent. The tannic acid in tea also helps kill odor-causing bacteria.
• If you use henna to color your hair, use tea instead of water when mixing your paste. Try black or ceylon for brunettes and chamomile for blondes.
• A great way to relax or practice simple meditation is with a cup of tea. Start your day with a cup or take a tea break to refocus a hectic day.

Beauty Tea Recipes:

Hair Conditioner: Take a glass of green tea and then add lemon juice to it. After shampooing your hair, rinse it with the mixture to get soft and silky hair. But don't rinse the hair again with water. Just leave it for combing.

Mild astringent: will keep your complexion clean and glowing with health.

Ingredients:

2 tea bags of your choice (green, orange pekoe, earl grey, and jasmine work well)
1/4 cup boiling water
1/4 cup witch hazel

Directions: Pour boiling water over the tea bags and allow them to steep for at least one hour or until cool. Remove the bags and combine the cooled tea with the witch hazel. Pour the mixture into a clean container. To use: Apply to clean skin with a cotton pad after cleansing.
Yield: 4 ounces

Sunburn Soothers
Mix 1 cup rolled oats with half a diced cucumber and a cup of hot green tea (all of which counter redness and inflammation). Then add 4 tablespoons of honey (for moisture). Refrigerate for an hour. Apply to sensitive areas, and cover with a cold, damp washcloth for 10 minutes. Rinse.

Give Your Feet Relief
Drop a few teaspoons of loose chamomile flowers tea into a basin of hot water. Then add a handful of dried parsley and a few drops of essential oil (try lavender or just use olive oil).
Let steep for 10 minutes and then slip feet in for a 15-minute soak. After your feet should feel refreshed and renewed! Or try dunking your tootsies in a tub of cool green tea. Its astringent and antiseptic properties with leave them tingling and smelling fresh.

Sooth Shaving Slip-ups
Pat razor-burned areas with a wet tea bag; the tannic acid in the tea reduces redness.

Quick Canker Pain Reliever
Place a cool, wet tea bag over the sore for a few minutes several times a day..

  8. Emerging Health News About Tea

TEA AND CANCER
University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

TEA AND ANTIOXIDANTS
Several substances, classified as antioxidants (also referred to as polyphenols), are found in tea and these are the components that are able to combine with unstable positively charged oxygen molecules, otherwise known as 'free radicals’. The free radicals have been shown to cause not only cellular damage but also can damage DNA. As a consequence to the damage, various health problems develop.

TEA AND VITAMINS
Have a large glass of orange juice with breakfast, or two small cups of green tea. They both have the same amount of vitamin C. Tea is also a good source of folic acid, potassium, B vitamins and other essential nutrients such as manganese, niacin, and vitamin K,

TEA AND YOUR HEART
Tea is a rich source of dietary flavonoids, which have been shown to have a protective effect against heart disease. A Dutch study published in an April 2002 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that tea drinkers had a substantially lower risk of heart attacks than non-drinkers.
