2. Reason's to trade Coffee for Tea
1) Coffee raises the blood pressure more so than tea -> Tea contains 1/3 the caffeine found in coffee. Studies have indicated caffeine plays a role in increasing a person's blood pressure.
2) Tea is associated with relaxing while coffee is associated with the hectic rush of daily life.
3) Save money: One pound of coffee yields 40-50 cups, while one pound of tea yields 200 cups.
4) Drinking tea instead of coffee to help quit smoking is recommended among the steps to quit smoking, by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
5) Tea consumption may decrease the risk of ovarian cancer -> see the Tea NEWS for a recent report.

3. The Caffeine Debate
Whether caffeine is harmful or beneficial has been an unending debate and topic of research. Since the most popular beverages in North America - coffee, soda and tea - all contain caffeine, it's beneficial to know the possible effects it may have on the consumer's body.

Caffeine is one of the fastest absorbing drugs currently available, and acts within minutes by blocking the chemical the body releases to the brain to indicate fatigue, resulting in a buzz. However, research indicates there are benefits to caffeine. At the University of Arizona, caffeine was found to improve memory in seniors. Researchers at UCLA furthered their conclusions to include caffeine improving and repairing the memory of elderly women. Other research has found caffeine beneficial for depression, addiction and gallstones.

Conversely, some researchers are convinced the quantity of caffeine the average person consumes is harmful. Research has shown caffeine can raise the blood pressure enough to increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke by 20-30%. In addition a dependency on caffeine to make it through each busy and stressful day could result in extra wear and tear on the body.

If you are concerned about caffeine you can decrease your intake by drinking tea instead of coffee. Tea has one third the caffeine found in coffee. Furthermore, to a point you can control the amount of caffeine in your tea:

1) Tea bags will deliver more caffeine than loose tea because of the higher rate of infusion.
2) The amount of leaves used to brew the tea, the temperature of the water and the time you leave the tea steeping will affect the amount of caffeine in your cup.
3) If you leave the tea to infuse for 30 seconds and then pour it out, you will be pouring out most of the caffeine because it is the first component to leave the tea leaf. This is a way you can decaffeinate your favorite tea by hand.
4) Drink herbal teas such as Chamomile or Hibiscus. Herbal teas contain no caffeine as they have no tea in them.

4. Green Tea may stop Prostate Cancer development:
The antioxidants in tea could help the body stop free radicals from damaging human cells which can lead to cancer. In a study researchers from the University of Parma found that green tea lowered the chance of developing prostate cancer by 27%.

The study was conducted for one year and included 32 men. In support of their study, they found that regions which consume a Mediterranean diet have lower rates of prostate cancer due to the high level of antioxidants found in the vegetables regularly consumed.

5. Tea Bits:
Chewing gum infused with white tea -> could be entering the market in the future as a treatment for potentially pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Researchers from Pace University found that adding white tea extract also enhances the bacterial effect of other oral agents. When white tea extract was added to chewing gum, it inactivated over 90% of virus activity. To read more please click here:

Green tea could fight autoimmune disorders -> A researcher at the Medical College of Georgia's School of Dentistry has conducted extensive studies into the polyphenols found in green tea. In a recent study he found that cells exposed to green tea showed suppressed levels of autoantigen in normal cells. Autoantigens are involved in useful functions; however changes in their location and amount may trigger an immune response which is linked to autoimmune disorder. This disorder occurs when the immune system attacks the body's tissue. By repressing the autoantigens, the immune system has fewer targets to potentially attack, therefore decreasing the risk of the disorder. To read the full report please click here:

6. Tea NEWS: Research links tea consumption to a possible decrease in Ovarian Cancer.
A report in the December issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine research indicates women who consume two or more cups of tea a day may decrease their risk of ovarian cancer by 46%. The study, conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Sweden found that each additional cup of tea per day was associated with an 18% decreased risk of ovarian cancer. For 15.1 years, participants were followed for cancer incidence, and the study demonstrated that drinking two or more cups of tea was inversely related to ovarian cancer. More research is expected to confirm the findings of the study. To read the full report please click here:

8. Once Upon A Tea Time.
This issue's featured story is from Barbara, FL:

A few of my neighbors and I have just started to celebrate our birthday's by going out for "tea parties". It has been such fun. But then one of the friends has recently been confined to her home to take care of her 88 year old mother, Juanita. Yesterday was Juanita's birthday and we took the "tea party" to her. we ALL got dressed up, hats and all and arrived with various teas, sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, jams and a wonderful chocolate, raspberry birthday cake. Juanita was literally beside herself. She greeted of us at the door and was as "alive" as she has been in over a year. As she sat opening her presents, she said with her sweet little Southern accent, "Now I know how it feels to be Queen for a Day!" She was still so excited that by bedtime, she had a hard time falling asleep because she was remembering her very special day and "birthday tea party". And we all had a wonderful time adding that special time to her life. - Barbara.
