Dear Tea Friends,

As of July 1, we mark our first anniversary in our new location in Kingston, ON.  Last year at this time, we were getting ready to move out of our hotel that we had been in for most of June.  It has been a busy year since.  I must admit, I am looking forward to a more relaxing summer; last year was stressful and hectic becuase we were trying to get set up and caught up.  I learned alot from our cross country move.  If you ever plan on moving your business cross country, I have loads of advice I can give and hopefully can help you avoid some of the mistakes we made.  At the end of the day, the key to success in life is always learning from one's mistakes.  This, my friends, is wisdom.  I think I am a littler wiser and greyer now...LOL.  :-)

Perhaps the highlight of the past year is the World Tea Expo.  We had a great show and it was so much fun meeting and greeting customers and prospective customers at our booth.  We are busy following up with all the great contacts made at the show.  My seminar was a hit, though I was very nervous and didn't finish it all.  By the way, if you attended my seminar and want to hear the rest of it or ask questions, I am happy to chat with you.  Just call me at the office, 613-887-2344 ext. 111.

As a  final note, please visit Healthy Cup to learn more about our Organic Tea Club

Yours sincerely,

Sanjay Gupta

2. Green Tea Holds Promise in Preventing Damage Caused by Sleep Apnea
Green Tea compounds may help prevent neurological damage caused by Sleep Apnea, according to a new animal study. In a study that was conducted to mimic the bouts of oxygen deprivation experienced by those with obstructive sleep apnea, researchers found that when they added green tea to rats' drinking water, it seemed to protect the animals' brains from the damaging effects of lack of oxygen on the brain.

The results hint that green tea compounds could be useful as a potential Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) therapy according to the report featured in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The common disorder in which soft tissues in the throat temporarily collapse and block the airway during sleep, causes repeated stops and starts in breathing throughout the night. Symptoms include chronic loud snoring and gasping, daytime sleepiness, and if untreated, has been linked to high blood pressure and studies show lack of oxygen may lead to memory and learning difficulties.

The study, designed To see whether catechin polyphenols could help shield the brain from oxygen deprivation was carried out by Dr. David Gozal and colleagues at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky. These green tea compounds act as antioxidants, helping to neutralize cell damaging particles called oxygen free radicals. These normal byproducts of metabolism, in excess, lead to a state known as oxidative stress.

Cognitive problems experienced by some people with this sleep disorder have been attributed to oxidative stress. During the course of the study, rats were exposed to sporadic bouts of lack of oxygen over 14 days, and those provided water containing these green tea polyphenols did not experience oxidative stress and even performed better on learning and memory tests. This was not the case for those not given the green tea compounds.

Dr. David Gozal says in theory, a regular cup of green tea could be beneficial, in combination with standard OSA treatment. Definitive proof would have to be provided by trials in human patients.

3. Tea Cuts Cancer Risk in Smokers
Drinking tea (as well as eating fruits and vegetables rich in flavonoids) may help protect smokers against lung cancer, according to researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Flavonoids are water- soluble plant pigments that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can reverse damage to tissues. A study of the dietary habits of smokers with and without lung cancer helped the UCLA team make their conclusion.

The most effective flavonoids were found in green and black teas, strawberries, brussel sprouts, apples, beans and onions. Since 90 percent of lung cancers are caused by tobacco smoking, the findings published in the recent issue of "Cancer" are significant.

Dr. Zuo-Feng Zhang, a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Centre, says several larger studies are needed to confirm the findings, and though he is hesitant to make diet recommendations, "it's not a bad idea for everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables and drink more tea."

Flavonoids may protect against lung cancer by stopping the development of blood vessels that tumors need to grow and spread, a process called angiogenesis, Dr. Zhang said. They may also stop cancer cells from growing, allowing a naturally programmed cell death, or apoptosis, to occur.

Flavonoids' antioxidant properties may also counteract the damage tobacco smoke does to DNA, Zhang said, noting that flavonoids affect the development of lung cancer in smokers but not in nonsmokers. He said "The naturally occurring chemicals may be working to reduce the damage caused by smoking.

Further studies are planned to narrow down what particular vegetables, fruits and teas are most effective, and number of servings required is planned.

5. Want Better Skin? Drink Some Green Tea!
You've probably heard the saying its what's inside that counts. If you drink green tea, Nutrition Expert Liz Lipski says it has anti-inflammatory properties, and it's protective to the cell membrane. Liz continues that it may even help prevent skin cancer. A recent study in the Archives of Dermatology backs this up. It shows that whether taken orally or applied to the skin, green tea can reduce the risk of damage from UV light (such as the the burning rays of the sun), potentially reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Samantha Heller, a clinical nutritionist a NYU Medical Center in New York City, says the healthier the foods you consume, the better your skin will look. She adds that the polyphenols in green tea have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial to your skin's overall health.

7. Fight Bacteria with White Tea
White Tea is gaining popularity due to its mild taste and its additional amount of antioxidant power when compared With green tea. The leaves and buds used to make white tea undergo less processing than green tea leaves and as a result retain more antioxidant power. While both beverages contain cancer-fighting antioxidants called polyphenols, studies have also found that the polypenols in white tea may help fight some common bacterial infections, including strep and staph.

This issue of Tea 4 Free News - was written by Mary-Ellen Tessier. I recently returned from my trip to the World Tea Expo in Las Vegas. The show was a great success and as always reminded me why I am so passionate about tea. How could a person not be so excited about a product that has so many variations and has an endless list of health benefits!

There are so many perspectives on what the ultimate tea experience is and most interestingly, as diverse as they are, for each attendee and exhibitor, their take on tea is what keeps them focused on why they want to be part of this ever expanding industry. I met lots of interesting people, heard lots of interesting stories, purchased a few tea related items, and had some books about tea autographed by their authors.

People often ask me, "after being in the business for a while, do you think you are any less passionate about tea?" My answer, Absolutely Not! If anything, whenever I see an exciting new variety of tea (like our four new flavors of Chinese Organic Tea) or an interesting new product (like our great Silk Bag Merchandisers), I feel like I'm back at the very first show I attended where my fascination with all things began to explode. As I drink my cup of Oolong tea writing this, I smile and marvel at the many wonderful experiences I have had so far, and dream about many more to come!
